Urology

Diseases of the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra) are treated by the medical specialty of urology. Additionally, the topic of the male reproductive organs is covered (penis, testes, scrotum, prostate, etc.). Urologic health is crucial since illnesses in these body components can affect everybody.

One surgical specialty is urology. A urologist is a medical professional skilled in surgery as well as internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, and other fields of medicine. This is so because urologists deal with a wide variety of clinical issues.

When to Consult a Urologist

The best doctors to handle any disease affecting the male reproductive system and urinary tract are urologists. Your care may entail involvement from other medical specialists. For example, a urologist may collaborate with an oncologist to treat prostate cancer or with a gynecologist to address pelvic pain in female patients. The head of your medical team will be the urologist if you have a urologic issue, though.

We encourage you to consult with a urologist when your experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Urinary issues can include frequent urination throughout the day or at night, burning or pain when urinating, trouble starting to urinate, a weak urine stream, or the feeling that you are not completely voiding.
  • Kidney pain typically affects the flank and may result from a variety of conditions, including kidney infections, urinary stones, kidney obstructions, and kidney stones themselves. A urologist needs to evaluate this.
  • Urinary stones are a highly prevalent concern. Stones can develop in the kidney and occasionally travel via the ureter to the lower urinary tract, where they can cause excruciating discomfort. The typical symptoms are dull flank ache and acute shooting pain radiating to the groin/testicles from the flanks. Rarely, stones may show no symptoms at all or present with blood in the urine. Usually, an abdominal CT scan or ultrasound will reveal the presence of stones.
  • These days, the PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test is commonly offered as a component of wellness plans and occasionally is clinically necessary. A urologist should always evaluate abnormal PSA test findings because elevated PSA does not always imply prostate cancer.
  • Blood in the urine can be brought on by a number of conditions, including infections, kidney stones, urologic malignancy, etc. This needs to be addressed carefully and may manifest as tiny clots in the urine, bright red urine, or pink urine. Sometimes, it can only be seen when the urine is examined under a microscope.
  • Testicular pain or enlargement may be acute or persistent. A testicular lump should never be disregarded. Testicular cancer may be the cause. Varicocele, an infection, a tumor, or dilated veins can all cause testicular pain. Urgent medical attention is required for sudden testicular pain because the testicular blood supply may be twisted as a result (torsion).
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections need to be treated, too.
  • Penis pain may be brought on by the inability to retract the foreskin (phimosis), pain during erections, or pain while urinating. A lesion or ulceration of the penile skin can occasionally happen, which could indicate cancer.
  • Sexual dysfunction includes premature ejaculation, pain during sexual activity, or bending of the penis during an erection.
  • Oftentimes, issues with the male spouse are discovered during the investigation of infertility. Low sperm numbers, sperm absence, or non-motile sperm in the semen could all be contributing factors.
