Dr. Ashraf Zeid is an Ophthalmic Surgeon working at Medcare Hospital, Sharjah. He completed his MBBS from Cairo University, Egypt. He went on to complete his Master's in Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. His academic qualifications are complemented by a Diploma in Ophthalmic LASER Applications from Cairo University, which focused on the safety and efficacy of retinal and anterior segment laser procedures. Additionally, he attended an Advanced Glaucoma Surgical Training workshop held by the International Glaucoma Society in Geneva, Switzerland. As a member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS) and a scientific advisor to the Emirates Society of Ophthalmology (ESO), he is actively involved in the global ophthalmology community. He is also a member of the Egyptian Ophthalmology Society (EOS).
With nearly two decades of surgical and clinical experience across the Middle East and North Africa, Dr. Zeid’s career includes various leadership roles where he developed and delivered integrated clinical governance systems, ensuring high-quality care standards. During the initial years of his career, he worked as an independent Ophthalmologist in Egypt, focusing on Cataract and Refractive Surgeries. Later, he joined the Alferdaws Eye Hospital in Egypt as an Executive Medical Director and Surgical Trainer, where he mentored young surgeons and developed curricula for advanced cataract and refractive surgery. Subsequently, he relocated to the UAE to take on the role of a Cataract and Refractive Surgeon at UltraLasik Eye Center, Dubai and as a Specialist in Ophthalmology at NMC Royal Hospital, Sharjah.
Dr. Zeid specialises in anterior segment surgeries, with expertise in cataract, corneal, refractive, and medical retinal procedures. He has mastered the full spectrum of cataract surgery, including phacoemulsification on all major platforms, premium and toric IOL implantation, refractive lens exchange, and ICL implantation. His corneal work includes keratoconus management (crosslinking, ICRS, amniotic membrane grafting), while his refractive practice spans PRK, LASIK, Femtolasik, FemtoSMILE, and LASER extra. In the field of medical retina, he provides advanced care for diabetic retinopathy, AMD, CNV, retinal thinning, and vascular disorders, utilizing OCT, FA, B-scan ultrasonography, and offering intravitreal anti-VEGF, steroid implants, and retinal laser therapy. He is also experienced in neuro-ophthalmology (optic neuritis, glaucoma-related optic neuropathies, visual field disorders), paediatric ophthalmology (congenital cataract, amblyopia, strabismus), and ocular surface disease/dry eye management.
Apart from his clinical practice, Dr. Zeid is a passionate educator and surgical trainer. He continues this mission as Head of the Surgical Experience Workshops & Wetlab Committee of the Emirates Ophthalmology Society, leading wetlabs and surgical training initiatives across the region. He is a regular faculty member, instructor, and presenter at major international ophthalmology congresses. As a volunteer surgeon with the Al Basar International Foundation, he has participated in multiple outreach surgical camps across African countries, performing high-volume cataract surgeries in underserved communities with limited access to specialised care.
Dr. Zeid is certified as a Sinai Trail Extreme Medicine Specialist, integrating field medicine with endurance in challenging environments. A dedicated hiker, cyclist, and sports enthusiast, he embraces physical challenges as a way to sharpen mental focus and maintain balance between his demanding surgical career and personal well-being. He speaks Arabic and English.
