Endometriosis

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a common gynaecological condition in which the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus, called the endometrium, grows outside the uterus. This tissue can grow on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other organs in the pelvis, causing pain and discomfort.

Possible Causes for Endometriosis

The specific cause of endometriosis is not completely understood. Factors that possibly contribute to the development of endometriosis include:

  • Genetics: Endometriosis may run in families, suggesting a genetic predisposition to the condition.
  • Hormones: Endometriosis is an oestrogen-dependent condition, meaning that oestrogen levels in the body influence it.
  • Immune System Dysfunction: Some researchers believe that an abnormal immune response may allow endometrial cells to implant and grow outside the uterus.
  • Environmental Toxins: Exposure to certain environmental toxins or chemicals may increase the risk of developing endometriosis.

However, it is important to note that endometriosis can also affect women without any identified risk factors.

Signs & Symptoms for Endometriosis

Endometriosis symptoms include pelvic pain, painful periods, pain during intercourse, and infertility. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical help to determine if endometriosis may be the cause.

Diagnosis for Endometriosis

At Medcare, we offer comprehensive care for endometriosis, including diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care. Our team of expert gynaecologists and other healthcare professionals work together to provide individualized care for each patient. A physical examination, review of the patient's medical history, and imaging exams like an MRI or ultrasound are often all part of our approach to diagnosing endometriosis. Laparoscopy surgery performs a diagnostic and therapeutic role in confirming the diagnosis and removing the endometrial tissue from other organs.
