Addiction is a complex condition that affects the brain, behavior, emotions, and daily functioning.
Recovery requires a comprehensive approach that addresses not only substance use or addictive behaviors, but also the underlying cognitive, emotional, and psychological factors that contribute to them.
Our specialized outpatient addiction service is led by a Neuropsychologist with expertise in addiction psychology, neuropsychological assessment, psychotherapy, and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).
Treatment begins with a detailed evaluation of cognitive and emotional functioning, including:
Attention and concentration
Memory and learning
Executive functioning
Impulse control
Decision-making abilities
Emotional regulation
This assessment helps identify brain-based factors contributing to addiction and guides the development of an individualized treatment plan.
Personalized therapy may include:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Motivational Interviewing
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Relapse Prevention Therapy
Emotional Regulation and Stress Management Training
Therapy focuses on understanding triggers, building healthy coping strategies, strengthening motivation for change, and supporting long-term recovery.
TMS is a non-invasive neuromodulation treatment that can be integrated into addiction care to:
Reduce cravings and urges
Improve impulse control
Enhance motivation and treatment engagement
Support recovery from co-occurring depression or anxiety
TMS typically targets areas of the brain involved in decision-making, reward processing, and self-control. Treatment protocols are individualized and combined with psychotherapy to maximize outcomes.
Chronic addiction can affect higher-order cognitive functions. Cognitive rehabilitation helps patients:
Improve planning and organization skills
Strengthen decision-making abilities
Enhance attention and concentration
Develop healthier coping mechanisms
Improve social and occupational functioning
Family involvement can play an important role in recovery. Services may include:
Education about the neurobiology of addiction
Family therapy sessions
Boundary-setting and communication strategies
Guidance on creating a supportive recovery environment
Recovery extends beyond symptom reduction. Ongoing care includes:
Personalized relapse prevention planning
Identification of triggers and high-risk situations
Development of practical coping strategies
Follow-up monitoring and maintenance support
Referral to community and peer-support resources when appropriate
